The Daily Krapht – Volary – “OK Tonight”
This Daily Krapht is unlike any other we have featured. Sure, we are here to review and introduce our readers to another independent artist, but unlike many musicians we’ve covered in hopes of spreading the word and helping them reach a larger audience to help further their career, this artist has a different story.
Volary was created by Samantha Lien and unfortunately the upcoming album, The Light, is the final album for Volary due to the passing of Lien on November 1, 2013 as she lost her battle with breast cancer. Over the last few years, her friends and family put together one final album using her vocal recordings and demos she left behind. Lien was a talented musician with so much life ahead of her, but all of this was cut short. Lien had been writing music for over ten years and released a full length album in 2009. Producing and releasing The Light has been a therapeutic experience for her husband, family and friends.
When listening to the lead track of the album, “OK Tonight,” you can hear the fight in not only Lien’s vocals, but in the lyrics. With a 90s girl rock vibe similar to Liz Phair, Lien sings of the every day struggles, while also showing how strong she is by saying in the end, “I’m ok tonight.” The arrangement they created to go along with Lien’s vocals and lyrics for “OK Tonight” has it’s own tenacious identity with powerful guitar riffs to spread Lien’s message even clearer.
Samantha Lien’s story is a reminder to never take anything for granted in this life you’re given. While she may have lost her battle, it’s apparent that this gifted young woman was a fighter and she made that clear through her music on this final album, The Light. With October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, all of the ticket sales to Volary’s album release show in San Francisco on October 16th will be donated to two local non-profits supporting young cancer survivors and women in music production. If you’re ever going to get behind a great cause and an inspiring story, Volary is it. So, please take the time to listen to “OK Tonight,” but to also check out The Light in tribute to Samantha Lien’s short, but remarkable life.
