The Daily Krapht – Steps of Doe – “Beneath the Shadow of the King”
After a long night of drinking at a local watering hole, you’re bound to find a new friend who shares your enthusiasm for kicking back more than a few adult beverages. If you’re Molly Falck and Keena Batti, you may also discover a shared passion for music. Falck and Batti met while studying abroad in Cambridge, England and after returning to UC Berkeley, they decided to play music together starting on the street corners. Once graduating from Berkeley, the duo began writing music together and officially formed, Steps of Doe.
The first single off their upcoming debut full-length album, On Returning (out March 24, 2015), “Beneath the Shadow of the King,” gives the listener a definition of the gothic folk genre the duo describe themselves as. “Beneath the Shadow of the King” showcases Steps of Doe’s harmonies that blend as one throughout most of the song. It is clear that Falck and Batti were meant to perform together. There are moments when the track displays an ominous presence, but the duo try to trick you with an upbeat, and almost cheerful musical arrangement.
Steps of Doe have established a folk, Americana sound that is bound to make waves in the indie music scene. One thing’s for sure, the music Gods were working together the day that Molly Falck and Keena Batti met that day in Cambridge and anyone who listens to their music will be thanking those Gods for bringing together this talented duo to make beautiful music.
