THE DAILY KRAPHT – CHARLIE STACEY, DAVID TURAY, TILE GICHIGI-LIPERE – “SuNRiSe”
“SuNRiSe” is a track which slowly unfolds over the course of three minutes. Vocals shift through synths and a really nice bassline, accompanied by noise and eventually ending in it. It basically sounds like the image on the cover – it’s a hazy blue-purple piece of ambient, neo-soul, atmosphere music. It’s extremely good. The three artists – Charlie Stacey, David Turay and Tile Gichigi-Lipere – belong to The Cascading Forest of Alternative Destinies, a collective which focuses on experimental and improvisational music. David and Tile are in Myriad Forest, a band that’s also in this collective, which plays “intense, ambient, live-Electronic, spacemusic”, with David often on sax and Tile working with electronics, while Charlie, who’s performed with the band as well, mostly plays piano and keyboard. Needless to say, these guys are hugely talented.
The track is refined from an extended improvisation session and manages to capture the feeling of witnessing their improvisation live (that’s both pronunciations of live by the way). Seeing members of the collective riffing off eachother and creating an ebb and flow of melody, a product of the moment, is just awesome. This isn’t the first time they’ve captured this so well on recording. Their last release, Moth, featuring Charlie Wheatley and David Turay, is an experience to listen to – like hearing the soul of a saxophone trapped in a typewriter (in the most poetic sense). The CFAD’s members often make appearance at Steez and, if you follow them and Myriad Forest on social media, you can keep up to date with when they’ll be next performing – they are not to be missed.
