Brian Carroll – Miscellaneous
Brian Carroll is no stranger to the pages of Wordkrapht. We’ve covered his previous works, featured his songs on our Hand- Kraphted compilation and helped The New England Americana festival (which he was on the committee for) gain some press through our Indie-Funded. Carroll isn’t just a musician, he is an advocate for all things independent and we will proudly share whatever project he works on in the future. That being said, let’s delve into his most recent release shall we?
Miscellaneous, the latest album by the Americana/ Roots artist, is the product of the RPM challenge that took place back in February. For those unaware, The RPM challenge is a competition for artists to create an album of all original material (no cover songs) 10 songs or 35 minutes long. There isn’t a prize rewarded, except for the feeling of accomplishment for the artist. Taking a look at Miscellaneous, anyone can gather that Carroll didn’t succeed by RPM guidelines. Though he didn’t pass the challenge, it is us, the listeners that won. He came away with a terrific mix of songs new and old and for any Americana/roots lovers these seven songs are just for you.
In an attempt to be modest, Carroll mentions on his Bandcamp page the album is “Nothing fancy, just songs.” These tracks are stripped down to the fundamentals of Americana music. Created at Carroll’s house with him playing guitar, bass, mandolin and percussion and singing you can’t get more stripped down than that. Mark Whitaker helped out by playing banjo rounding out the wonderful, organic sound. Story-telling put to music, Miscellaneous is the perfect EP to put on, and really listen to; every lyric sung, every strum and stroke of the guitar. From the appropriately titled “Haunt Me”, which is haunting and heart-breaking to the impressive plucking and strumming featured on “Let Me In” Miscellaneous is anything but what the title is suggesting. Sure these songs may not have been originally planned to appear on the same album together, but now that they are, they fit beautifully.
Miscellaneous is an impressive set of seven songs that any and every fan of Americana music should own. If you haven’t checked out Carroll’s music the first three times we have featured it, now would be a good time to do so!
For those in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area be sure to check out Carroll and friends for Roots in The Round the last Sunday of every month at TOAD. Links including more information can be found at the bottom of the page.
