FeminINDIE: Pebble To Pearl
With a blend of funk, rock, blues, soul and R&B, Pebble to Pearl are a sonic force. There are no samples here. It’s pure musicianship with horns, slapping bass lines, funky guitar riffs and keys. Dari J pulls it all together with vocals that create thoughts of both Saturday night and Sunday morning.
The quintet from northern Virginia can slow it down and give you pure R&B as in tracks like “Farewell” and “Turn Your Life.” Their strength is when they drive you to your feet with funkified tunes like “Good Ass Love.” They will be playing throughout the summer and are working on new material. Be sure to go out and support them if you’re in the area.
We had a chance to talk to Dari J and learn more about Pebble To Pearl. Take a look below…
For those of us new to the band, who is Pebble To Pearl?
Pebble to Pearl (P2P) blends a unique sound of funk, rock, fierce and powerful blues delivered with soulful grooves and incomparable vocals. We aim to captivate, to mesmerize, to send chills down your spine, and to undeniably keep you entertained and dancing. We are a touring band, currently we tour the east coast but aspire for a broader range. We are extremely proud of our original music with songs available for download on iTunes and Reverbnation. We also have an original music video on YouTube, steadily gaining views of over 25k. With influences like Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson and Tina Turner our show is packed with everything but the kitchen sink.
Where do you get you inspiration from for song subject matter? Is the process a band effort or does it fall to certain people?
Dari J, our lead singer, is our main lyricist/writer, so the subject matter mainly comes from her and her life experiences. The band in whole creates the sound, and writes the music. We each contribute equally in the writing process and creation of each song, a team effort!
We have covered a few artists from the DC/VA/MD area. What do you like about the music scene there?
The music scene here in the metro area is very diverse. One can walk the club scene and hear 10 genres of music in one night. There can also be some “niche-y” areas, which creates opportunities for new bands or bands building fan bases to develop their following.
When was that moment when you first realized, “this is what I want to do” and what created that inspiration?
I (Dari J) have been singing since I was child. I have home videos of me performing for neighbors when I was 6 or 7 years old so, I guess I have always wanted to entertain. When I saw Michael Jackson in concert, I was awe inspired. That was a major event for me. As an idol of mine, it was a career catalyst.
What has been your biggest struggle in your music career so far and what are you most proud of?
The biggest struggle so far has been life in general. Some of the members have family, jobs, and other responsibilities, which of course can slow a music career. I am big on family, so would never stand in anyone’s way of pursuing that, but recording and scheduling practices with 5 different schedules to consider is very hard.
When you’re not working on your own music, who are you listening to?
No one in particular. I typically throw on XM radio or Pandora and listen to either old school funk or top 40 hits. I like to know what’s hitting the stations currently and stay grounded in my roots.
If you had a chance to play with anybody from history, alive or dead, who would it be and why?
Michael Jackson or Stevie Wonder (Dari J)
What does it mean to you to be an independent artist in the music industry?
We can make it on our own. You truly appreciate your accomplishments and the fight to succeed.
What is next for the band?
World conquest!? No, we are currently working on new original material, and starting our summer club tour. Hopefully in the near future we can start to travel overseas.
